This is NOT just another dull tome about factors in human milk you can't pronounce, spell or remember!

Dr. Hanson is a pediatrician turned immunologist who gives us, in understandable terms, a look at the elaborate and wondrous world of immunology as it pertains to human milk and infant protection from disease. The book reviews and interprets the recent literature and presents evidence-based "factoids" for use in speaking with parents and for teaching. Included is a thorough description of the development of host defense and how the components in human milk assist the infant's underdeveloped immune system as it grows.

Dr. Hanson discusses the current literature regarding breastfeeding and the risk of infections and infant mortality, but also examines the role of human milk and the immune system in the development of allergy, obesity, autoimmune diseases and other long-term illness. This book is must reading for every health care professional who cares for mothers and babies, and belongs on every lactation consultant's bookshelf.
