![]() 1998 American Academy of Pediatrics Annual Chapter Forum Resolutions The 1998 Annual Chapter Forum will be held at the Westin Hotel OHare, Rosemont, Ill., Sept. 11-13, 1998. AAP chapter presidents and vice presidents will convene to exchange ideas, discuss concerns, and debate resolutions. Officers will consider and vote on 72 resolutions that will give advice on the future direction of AAP policies. The resolutions of most interest to breastfeeding advocates are: 10. Health Insurance Coverage for Breastfeeding Consultation Submitted by: District VIII Resolved, that the Academy consider breastfeeding consultation a routine aspect of health care during the entire lactation period; and be it further Resolved, that the Academy encourage health insurers to cover breastfeeding consultation with a lactation consultant when the family is referred by the attending physician. 16. Examination of Newborns Submitted by: District IX Resolved, that the Academy include in the periodicity schedule that all newborn infants be examined by a health care professional qualified to care for infants between 48 and 96 hours of life and afterwards as indicated. 36. Breastfeeding Promotion Submitted by: District VIII Resolved, that the Academy recommend to the Residency Review Committee (RRC) that pediatric training programs and neonatology fellowship programs include significant practical breastfeeding management training; and be it further Resolved, that the Academy evaluate outcomes of current easily identified breastfeeding management teaching programs to promote a "best practices" approach to educating pediatric residents, neonatology fellows and practicing pediatricians and neonatologists about breastfeeding management. 37. Breastfeeding Promotion Submitted by: District VIII Resolved, that the Academy implement programs to regularly remind pediatricians of the superiority of breastfeeding over nonhuman milk substitutes. 38. Provision of Breastfeeding Information for Pediatricians Submitted by: Nebraska Chapter Resolved, that the Academy develop a rapid retrieval information source (Internet or phone) for pediatricians regarding benefits and contraindications to breastfeeding, including information on the effects of maternal medication and diseases on the breastfed infant. 53. Investigating the Ezzo Program and the FTT Infants Associated with It Submitted by: District IV Resolved, that the Academy evaluate the infant management program outlined in Preparation for Parenting and On Becoming BABYWISE and determine the extent of its effects on infant health; and be it further Resolved, that the Academy inform its members and the public regarding the results of the evaluation of the Ezzo Program. |
