If you are interested in getting more involved with the San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition (SDCBC), please take a look at the following positions and projects. The future of this Coalition depends on our members' participation - We need you to get involved! This is a great opportunity to network with other health professionals who support breastfeeding.

  • PRESIDENT - The primary duties of the President include leading SDCBC Board and General meetings, strategic and events planning, setting meeting agendas, rapid response to issues and networking with other groups that support breastfeeding. Time commitment: Approximately 14 hours per month.
  • VICE PRESIDENT/PRESIDENT-ELECT - The Vice President is responsible for attending SDCBC Board and General meetings and serving as a backup for the president. This position lasts two years, which is part of a four-year commitment. The Vice-President or his/her delegate is responsible for coordinating the Newsletter. Time commitment: approximately 12 hours per month.
  • SECRETARY - The primary duties of the SDCBC Secretary are to record and prepare the minutes of both the monthly Board and bi-monthly General Coalition meetings, then forwarding them to the Board for review and final distribution. A copy of all minutes must be kept for permanent record and a copy of the general meeting minutes, once approved, sent to the Webmaster for placement on the web site. If unable to make a meeting, it will be the secretary's responsibility to find someone who will take minutes. The secretary also maintains the membership and other Coalition databases, Time commitment: approximately 12 hours per month.
  • TREASURER - This position is responsible for maintaining the non-profit account for the Coalition. Duties include writing checks for bills and expenses, keeping record of all transactions, maintaining non-profit status with the IRS, and getting a financial statements to the Coordinator or President for general and board meetings. The treasurer will work with the accountant to see that all tax documents are submitted as appropriate. Time commitment: approximately 10 hours per month.
  • IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT - The immediate past president will answer and maintain the 1-800-371-MILK toll-free phone line and chair the nominations committee. The Immediate past-president will act as a resource for the president. Time commitment approximately 6 hrs per month.
  • BOARD MEMBERS - (5-7 Seats) All board members are asked to attend monthly board meetings and bi-monthly general coalition meetings, chairing or taking the lead on a project or at a minimum being involved in a project. Time commitment: Approximately 5-8 hours a month (varies depending on project involvement).

SDCBC PROJECTS

The following projects are actively seeking new participants. Students, new and seasoned professionals are welcome! Get involved - we need you! Joining a project group is a great way to meet SDCBC members and network with other health professionals. Please contact the project chair or contact Nancy Wight, President, at wightsd@aol.com.

  • Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace Award. Seek out, communicate with, judge and present awards to candidates for this award each year. Coordinate press releases and award ceremonies. Chair - Eyla Boies
  • Breastfeeding Resource Guide. Help collect entries, and assemble, verify and distribute Guides in English and Spanish to the community. Chair: TBD
  • Newsletter: "Breastfeeding Update". Plan issues, recruit writers and articles, write features and distribute newsletter. Chair - Nancy Wight
  • Web Site (www.breastfeeding.org). Monitor, update and improve website. Develop and market on-line educational offerings. Chair - Nancy Wight
  • Finance. Explore possible funding sources to aid in sustainability of the Coalition. Corporate sponsorships, major benefactors and other funding sources will be approached for support. This committee explores possible grant sources to aid in the sustainability of the Coalition. Finance Chair - Jim Murphy
  • Advocacy/Public Relations. Respond with press releases and appropriate education to breastfeeding issues as they arise. Chair - Wendy Hovland Henry
  • Professional Conference. Plan and carry out all functions related to the conference. Chair - Nancy Wight
  • Membership. Work with the SDCBC to recruit new members, coordinate annual membership drive, and recruit and train new volunteers. Chair - Rita Allen
