  • Established in 2000
  • Mission: Improve family health by making breastfeeding the cultural norm, creating a supportive public environment and improving rates of initiation and duration of breastfeeding in San Benito County.
  • 10 Year Goal: Increase the proportion of mothers who initiate exclusive breastfeeding at baby's birth to 50% by 2010.

  • Strategy 1: Influence healthcare and community standards of breastfeeding practices by facilitating expansion of lactation expertise (CE classes) in the local health care professions.
  • Strategy 2: Strengthen breastfeeding knowledge and accessibility by establishing bilingual childbirth and breastfeeding education classes to teenage parents and monolingual Latino families.
  • Strategy 3: Strengthen breastfeeding knowledge and accessibility by developing a breastfeeding outreach program to local secondary schools.
  • Strategy 4: Strengthen breastfeeding knowledge and accessibility by developing and distributing a bilingual breastfeeding resource guide to the perinatal population.
  • Strategy 5: Influence community standards of breastfeeding practices by assembling and distributing breastfeeding kits to postpartum mothers.
  • Strategy 6: Mobilize media campaigns, community partnerships and the Baby Friendly Initiative by developing a speaker's bureau.
