City of Escondido FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Joyce Masterson The Sixth Annual Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace Award will be presented to the City of Escondido by the San Diego Breastfeeding Coalition in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 the 4:00 p.m. City Council meeting. The City of Escondido is being recognized for its efforts to ensure that new mothers will have the nursing experience they desire by providing prenatal education, maternity leave support, assistance in transition back to work, continued support from a lactation specialist, and adequate worksite facilities for women to breastfeed and express milk for their babies. Additionally, the Lactation Program provides paid breast pump rental (up to $500) and a free nursing kit for transporting expressed milk. World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated internationally every year to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding. Governor Gray Davis has proclaimed August 2001 to be "Breastfeeding Awareness Month." Breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for infants, lowers infant mortality, and reduces a mother's risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition is a non-profit association of health care professionals which promotes and supports breastfeeding through professional education and community outreach.

San Diego Spirit
The following was taken from the All Access, the official e-newsletter of the San Diego Spirit:
The Spirit organization was awarded a San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace Award. The award was presented to the club for its support of employees who are breastfeeding, highlighted by Spirit defender Joy Fawcett. The team has made it a priority to make three locations (UCSD Training Facility, Torero Stadium and the Spirit office) breastfeeding-friendly. In addition to the three facilities in San Diego, the club makes it comfortable for players and staff members to be able to breastfeed while on the road.
